On Monday, a 19-year-old Michigan man admitted guilt for threatening to use Instagram to carry out a mass murder that would target Jews in particular.
The man has been identified as Seann Pietila. Pietila spoke with another user in June about carrying out a mass murder and live-streaming the event on Instagram, according to the indictment. Pietila specifically stated that she wished to encourage people to “take arms against the Jewish-controlled state” in at least one of the communications that the prosecutors emphasized.
Seann Pietila: Who is she?
Seann Pietila is 19 years old. He entered a guilty plea on a single federal offense of distributing threatening communications in interstate commerce. He faces up to five years in jail, along with a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release.
According to the Justice Department, Pietila will receive punishment in March and be prohibited from possessing any weapons.
The American Jewish, Muslim, and Arab communities have reported an uptick in threats and intolerance at the same time as Seann Pietila filed a guilty plea. Last month, FBI Director Christopher Wray sent out a warning, claiming that antisemitism in the US is at “historic levels.”
After Pietila’s online conversation was reported to the FBI on June 13 or thereabouts, Pietila was taken into custody, and a search warrant was executed at his home. Weapons, tactical vests, scopes, a Nazi banner, black skull masks, and other objects were discovered during the search. According to the federal complaint, authorities found a date, the name of an East Lansing, Michigan, synagogue, and a list of weaponry, including firearms, explosives, and Molotov cocktails, on Pietila’s iPhone notes app.
The document states that Seann Pietila later told investigators he didn’t plan to carry out the mass deaths he had indicated. According to the complaint, he also stated that he was aware that one of the Instagram accounts he was texting was a 16-year-old boy from New Zealand.
